I held a position in XYZ company last year. Sold calls against it. Some expired worthless, others I closed the positions for profits. How is this income reported?

RK asked:

I understand that when you Sell Calls, i.e. Covered calls, the upside is limited and the outlook needs to be neutral or moderate bullish. However I have a question about this covered call stratergy….
(Please ignore commison and interest etc for this example)
1. I have 100 stocks of XYZ that I brought for $12.00.
2. Now the stock value is $6. So I am in deep loss i.e. $600 loss or 50% loss.
3. XYZ earning is going to be announced on 29 FEB 2008. I think they may beat/miss the earning, BUT I don’t think the price will go beyond $10 before MAR 21.
4. So, if I SELL a XYZ CALL (Covered with my 100 shares) for MAR 08 for STRIKE Price of $10.00, which has an value of $0.10 right now.
5. I will be credited with 100*0.10 = $10
6. So on MAR 22, the call will expire worthless if the stock price is still below $10 and I will get to keep $10.00. i.e. i will not be assigned.
Will this stratergy work?. (If stock price goes above $10, I am willing to sell my shares)
Thanks for your quick responses….That’s exactly my point, if the stock price never reaches $10 and I am not assgined can I keep the PREMIUM or NOT?

Like I said, I am already in loss, so can I hope this as an income stratergy and keep collecting premium over an over….

I mean …I am already in loss and I am not going to sell my stocks for less than $10 but at least by selling CALLS, I can collect the premium and reduce my cost.

winter_spice78 asked:

Why not call them chocolate covered apples instead? And many of those that are called caramel don’t have any caramel under the chocolate.
Stores like Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for example. I was looking online for plain caramel apples last year and couldn’t find hardly anywhere that didn’t have them covered in chocolate.
I’ve also noticed that unless you make them yourself, you can’t find them without nuts either. And many people anymore are allergic to nuts.
